PAUL PEARCE - THERE's A BAND OF TERRIGALS COMING AFTER YOU
The Terrigals want Paul Pearce's seat of Coogee so they can deliver it to one of their own.
SO you have to admire Paul Pearce MP (Coogee) for his strength of character and courage in openly defying the
Terrigal's attempts to force him to ditch NSW Labor Party policy
(as overwhelmingly determined by the rank and file at it's May 2008 conference).

NSW PARLIAMENT - REDUCED TO A SHAMBLES
The NSW parliament (sometimes known by the nick-name the "bearpit") has devolved into a shambles.
Standards of behaviour are declining, question time has become meaningless and the so called
family friendly hours are a farce. The executive government of Premier Morris Iemma treat parliament
as a mere play thing.
Thank goodness for Sydney MP Clover Moore who is one of the few who stand out loud and proud
for parliamentary democracy. She has consistently done so for 20 years.
On 19 June 2008 she had this to say :
First I say how disappointed I am and how concerned I am about the serious deterioration in the management of this Parliament. To
suspend standing orders and put this important bill through all stages today at a time when most members have not even seen the bill
is a real indictment. It is becoming a too-frequent action by the Leader of the House to treat the management of the Parliament, the
members and, therefore, their communities with contempt by not managing the program in such a way that members are able to
consult and examine the legislation before they speak on it or vote on it.
Legislation that is non-controversial should lie on the table for five days; legislation that is controversial or
landmark legislation such as this should be on the table for 28 days. This would allow the New South Wales
community to be aware of what is happening in this democratic body, and it would allow members to examine
the bills, consult with various stakeholders and communities and then make an informed decision when the
legislation came before us. I condemn the process we have seen today. I am very sorry to see the deterioration
in the running of this Parliament. As I said previously, it is the worst I have seen, and I call upon the Leader of
the House to start doing some work in managing the very important business of the Parliament and ensuring
that all members are in a position to inform themselves before they have to speak or vote upon such important
matters as that which we have before us today.

MORRIS IEMMA SETS HIGH STANDARD FOR PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE
Mr MORRIS IEMMA: The Leader of the Opposition speaks about standards. A couple of others in the Opposition
who ask questions in Parliament are sanctimonious hypocrites, like him.
Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: Premier, given that your department's code of conduct requires employees to carry out
their duties with "political neutrality and impartiality", why has Paul Lister, one of your department's public servants,
been used by the Labor Party to dig dirt on the Iguana workers who provided statutory declarations?
Mr MORRIS IEMMA: That is another nonsense question from the conspiratorial hub.

DAY 13
Pushed off the front pages by a 'death wish'

OFF THE FRONT PAGE BUT STORIES KEEP TRICKLING
The Daily Telegraph claims :
On the evening of May 28 Mr Scott had been addressing the Main Committee of Parliament when Ms Neal
and Liberal Sophie Mirabella began a bitter exchange across the chamber.
It was during this exchange that Ms Neal is said to have told Mrs Mirabella, who is heavily
pregnant, "Evil thoughts will turn your child into a demon."
......
Last Tuesday Ms Neal went up to Mr Scott and said words to the effect of, "You didn't hear me say that (demon child reference). Sophie
told you to say that."
A Liberal who watched the corridor encounter from behind the couple told The Daily Telegraph he could not detect any animosity and
that Mr Scott had given an "affable reply".
However, Mr Scott took the approach seriously and reported it to senior Opposition figures. Immediately after the conversation he wrote
a contemporaneous note on what was said should the Privileges Committee ask about it.
Ms Neal's office said yesterday, "We don't comment on hearsay."

STRAIGHT SHOOTING, STRAIGHT WALKING, STRAIGHT TALKING JOHN
Broken Hill based MP, John Williams (Murray Darling) who we call "Plains" to distinguish him from the other NSW politician, Senator John "Wacka"
Williams was not mucking around in the NSW parliament when a bill, preparatory to the electricity sell-off, was being debated.
In a straight talking contribution - he let everyone know where he stood, and he didn't give a rats what the majority of his colleagues in the
Nationals thought (even after they consider the forthcoming rural impact statement and the Auditor-Generals report) - he was voting against the
sell-off.
Now some people might say that he is being closed minded - by simply refusing to countenance the options. We reckon it's a breath of fresh air
to see some-one being straight up - and telling us what he really thinks.
I have stated from the start that I am opposed to the privatisation of electricity and I continue to be. Come September I will clearly let
members of the House know of my opposition to electricity industry privatisation. I come from a town where the values of the Labor
Party were derived. I represent people from that town that are concerned about the action that the Government is going to take. It is
not about securing future electricity supply. If it were I am sure that the Premier and the Treasurer would have spoken out about it a
long time before today, and a long time before they suddenly emerged saying they had to do something about securing the future
electricity supply. It is only about seeking revenue and cashing in the chips. I do not think that either Morris Iemma or Michael Costa
gives a damn about the future electricity supply in New South Wales.
.......
It is talking up this crazy notion that it is about securing the future electricity supply
It is absolutely not! Shortie Reville, a citizen of Broken Hill, went to the Labor conference and voted this proposal down. Shortie said to
me, "John, what are they going to sell next? What bit of silverware out of the cabinet are they going to sell next?" The rank and file of
the Labor Party know what the Government is up to. It has nothing to do with securing the future of this State; it is merely about
cashing in the chips. Morris Iemma and Michael Costa may believe this proposal is the solution to passing the privatisation of electricity
legislation but they still have a fight on their hands. It is not over yet. While many of The Nationals might be waiting to see the whites of
the eyes, I will state where I stand. Come that day in September that we have to vote to privatise electricity in this State, the blood will
be on the floor.

WINDING UP FOR A LATE RUN IN THE STRAIGHT
A quick check of the NSW parliamentary website shows that in the 12 months to 30 April 2008 Carmel Tebbutt MP (Marrickville)
spoke on 30 occasions in the NSW Legislative Assembly. That's about 2.5 times per month.
However, since 1 May 2008 she has spoken 7 times already (up to 20 June 2008) - thats about 3 times per month.
In the week commencing 17 June 2008 she spoke 3 times - an equivalent monthly ratio of 12 times per month.
In racing jargon a swooper is a horse that plods along in the early stages of the race but "swoops" down the outside of the field in the closing
stages - with an ever increasing rate of acceleration.
A pace rate of 2.5 then 3 then 12 has a real swoopers momentum feel to it.
It's probably just a co-incidence and unrelated to ructions inside the Iemma cabinet - which has been described recently as a "shambles".

NEAL BOMBSHELL - A RATINGS BEAT-UP OR THE REAL McCOY
According to the Sydney Morning Herald Channel 9's A Current Affair
will screen on 23 June 2008 an interview with Melissa Batten , the former staffer to
Belinda Neal MP (Robertson - NSW federal) which drops a bombshell about Ms Neal's behaviour during
and immediately after a row at Iguana Joes on that fateful Friday night in June (6 June 2008).
SO this seems guaranteed to get Ms Neal some more front page stories in the next week.
I would bet on 3/7 - but it may score the jackpot (7/7) . Time will tell.

PRICES UP BUT NSW MP's ON TRACK FOR PAY RISE
Prices for electricity are to rise by up to 8.5% on 1 July 2008.
HOWEVER, despite a promise by Premier Morris Iemma to freeze MP's salary this year, as at 20 June 2008
NSW MP's are set to receive a 4.3% wage increase on 1 July 2008, with a backbencher's pay to rise from
$126,560 to $132,030.
The reason for this is that no action has been taken (up to 20 June 2008) to freeze MP's salary from 1 July.
There are 2 ways a wage freeze could have been achieved in NSW. First by an amendment to the
Parliamentary Remuneration Act blocking an automatic flow on from a federal MP salary increase. This has
not been done.
Alternatively, by the federal government gazetting a regulation under the federal Remuneration and Allowances
Act to nominate a federal MP's salary as 95.8% of the Band A PEO salary. As at 20 June 2008 the federal
government has not done this.
