NSW   2007- 2011

In the period leading up to the general election in NSW held 24 March 2007 there was much speculation that "Independents" would be elected in
greater numbers, that Independent MP's would hold the balance of power in a hung parliament and that the election would be known as
"Independents Day".

That did not occur, the same number of Independent MP's were elected in NSW in 2007 as had been in 2003 - one Independent lost
his seat and Greg Piper was elected in the seat of Lake Macquarie.

Those Independents who had declared Independence during the period of the last parliament were unsuccessful in their bids to win
their seat when they stood as Independent, rather than as endorsed party candidates.

Alex McTaggart who had won the seat of Pittwater at a by-election in 2005 during the period of the 53rd NSW Parliament was
unsuccessful in retaining the seat at the general election.

This website will examine the behaviour of Independents in the 54th (2007-2011) NSW Parliament . There will probably be additional
Independents during the course of this Parliament as MP's declare Independence from the party that endorsed them at the 2007
election, either on a matter of principle, because they lose pre-selection for the 2011 election or are expelled from the party that
they belonged to at the 2007 election .It is possible an Independent may be elected if any by-elections are held.

It will:
  • Present Independent member information
  • Look at events in NSW politics as affected by or affecting Independents
  • Provide analysis
No nonsense

We are bystanders and commentators. We have a no nonsense approach . We occassionally give gratuitous advice - to
Independent and party politicians alike . In doing so, we hope to have fun along the way.
Why are we doing this?

Simply because we believe that democracy is best served when as much information as possible is available. We aim to
present information, views and opinions 'in the one place' or which may not be otherwise accessible from other sources.
